Jill Stefani Wagner -
pastel; watercolor

As a watercolor and pastel
artist, the consistent theme that attracts Jill is light and
shadow. How does sunlight play on an old building? What happens
to the folds of material when light cascades across it? Do
leaves on a tree appear differently at various times of day? How
is color affected when ambient light changes? Jill strives for
realism with a painterly twist, but sometimes allows the rich
hues and textures of a scene to dominate. Watercolors, pastels
and travel are wonderful companions that lead to endless
adventures and sometimes Jill is just happy to follow their
lead.

Carolyn Weins
- pastel

Carolyn primarily
creates pastel landscapes on location and in her
studio. She's attracted to the lighting, textures,
and moods of quiet places in nature, such as country
roads, wetlands, woods, streams, and fields. She
enjoys using pastels because of the rich tactile
surface, the variety of marks and the multitude of
textures that can be reinvented on paper. She also
focuses on the use of value and color to create a
feeling of light, shadow, and mood. Carolyn received
a B.A. in art from Eastern Michigan University.
Each summer she participates in art fairs. She also
has work available at Frame Factory, in Ann
Arbor.
In addition to
Ann Arbor Women Artists, Carolyn is a member of
the Ann Arbor Area Pastelists and the
Great Lakes Pastel Society.

"Art draws me,
like a magnet, to itself. I am fortunate that my pleasure,
my artistic 'bent', has been both my vocation and my
avocation."
As a youth,
strongly encouraged by her parents, Nancy attended Saturday
classes at the Detroit Institute of Art, drawing and
painting in the galleries. After spending a lifetime
creating, whether it be in theater painting behind the
scenes, or as an educator in front of a group, she has
explored many mediums. First in oil paints, laying down
lush, viscous color, then she moved into transparent
watercolor, layering colors and imagery alla prima. Once she
discovered the sensational handmade pastels she was hooked.
Whichever medium, she constantly pushes the material,
searching for the strength and impact of direct color, as
she paints from life and from her imagination.

Jan Wiedmayer
- pastel; acrylic

As an artist, Jan's goal is to bring
nature's colors and forms to life. Whether she uses pastels,
acrylics or oils to express her feelings artistically,
depends on what will work best in a given context. Her
realistic paintings of people, places and things reflect her
unique vision of nature's beauty. Stepping into her world
encourages the viewer to "live the moment." Jan shares with
the viewer her love and concern for nature's FRAGILE beauty,
and through her art,
she encourages all of us to become actively involved in
protecting nature for future generations. Jan returned to
the study of art in 2000, and for most of these years, she
has studied under Jon Lockard,
a nationally known artist and educator who has encouraged
her to take her art to the next level. World travel is a
major component of her continuing art education, and she
lives and works in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the summer and in
Winter Park, Florida in the winter. Having artist friends
and associates in both worlds provides her with tremendous
artistic stimulation.

Katherine
attended Concordia University-Ann Arbor, where she
studied music composition and performance. A self-taught
visual artist, she owns MoonSwings – a paper arts
studio with a mission to provide "moments of quiet enchantment" by inviting customers to experience peace and
calm through the viewing of Katherine's handmade
products such as books, journals, photo albums, ornaments
and greeting cards. Katherine enjoys experimenting with all
forms of art media
(currently utilizing recycled materials such as postage
stamps and security envelopes in uncommon ways to create
political art) but her
true passions are the study of genealogy (family history)
and teaching. She teaches "recycled art" workshops at the
Scrap Box in Ann Arbor, and teaches arts and crafts
classes for both children and
adults through Ann Arbor's Community Education & Recreation
Department. Katherine's artistic philosophy echoes
Picasso's statement that "all children are born artists –
the problem is how to remain one as an adult."

When Carol
joined Ann Arbor Women Artists 38 years ago, she was a
wood-cut artist. By 1980, she had begun her first quilt and
discovered that she loved working with textiles. Carol had
never before seen a quilt so she could be inventive in her
use of color, pattern, etc. Her bed-sized quilts looked
interesting hung on walls, and her work evolved when she
used techniques other than piecing.
These layered collages with surface applique and machine
"sketching" gave a more "painted" look and texture became
important. Carol is inspired by interesting fabrics, and she
rarely knows what the finished piece will look like. She has
exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibits and juried
and non-juried shows.

Two years ago, Nancy was heading out to find a gallery at
the University of Michigan's North Campus during a Saturday
morning snowstorm when serendipity struck in the form of a
woman appearing on the horizon, art box in hand. Nancy
approached, telling her she was on a mission to find art and
to learn watercolor, when she discovered the woman had just
come from a session of doing watercolor washes with the
Saturday Morning Artists, which later led to Nancy
discovering Ann Arbor Women Artists. Newly retired
and renewing drawing abilities learned years ago at
Washtenaw Community College, Nancy is now mapping out an
art journey, paying attention to where she's been, and
excited about what lies on the road ahead regarding
workshops and learning
opportunities.

Reka Zoltan

Reka's art is
a reflection of her emotions, experiences, being and
ideology. She has always been an observer of life, people,
their environment, emotional aspects and
characteristics. She enjoys expressing herself mainly using
the graphic arts, drawing, and watercolors. These media have
limitless possibilities of expression to her. She has shown
in galleries throughout Ann Arbor, Detroit, Memphis (TN),
Canada, and Germany. She is a member of a number of art
organizations and has a BS degree in Biology with a minor in
Chemistry, as well as a BFA. The science compliments the art
as both involve observation and a response to the
observation. Reka was born in Germany, and her family is
Hungarian from the Carpathian Basin. She came to America as
a young child and she still keeps connections with her
family all over the world. This international relationship
has had a large affect on her artwork.
