Drawing Workshop
- with Fred Horowitz
Saturday, December 1, 2007
Many of us know Fred Horowitz from his 35 years of teaching at
Washtenaw Community College. He received a BA degree from
Yale
University in 1960, a BFA from the Yale Art School in 1962, and
an MFA from the University of Michigan. As a freshman, he
enrolled
in Josef Albers’s basic drawing course. Much of his
teaching inspiration stems from that encounter.
Last year his book on Joseph Albers as a teacher, Joseph
Albers, To Open Eyes, The Bauhaus, Black Mountain, and Yale,
was published by Phaidon. This event was
celebrated with
workshops and a gallery
exhibit at WCC. He has also written an
excellent book on art
appreciation, More Than You See. After his retirement in
2003, he
taught the Albers color course at the U of M School of Art and
Design.
At his workshop, Fred will introduce several of Josef Albers’s
line exercises, provide
useful tips applicable to
representational drawing, and demonstrate several open-ended
abstract drawing projects intended to stimulate further work in
graphics or painting.
Fred's love of drawing, delight in teaching, and warm, engaging
manner promises an interactive day of discovery - reawakening
our drawing skills and re-opening our eyes.
Marketing Your Art
- with Alyson Stanfield
March 15th and 16th, 2008
Alyson is a dynamic presence on
the art marketing scene. Her Art Action newsletter is
available to download at
ArtBizConnection.com.
Prior to starting her own business, Alyson worked in art museums
for ten years. She
most recently served as Director of Education
at the Wichita Art Museum (1998-2001). In that role, she
helped conceive The Living Room, a space designed to
encourage interactive learning about art among the generations.
As Curator of Education at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art
at the University of Oklahoma (1995-98), Alyson created
the award-winning education program that trained university
students to lead untraditional museum tours for high-school art
students. She is most proud of organizing the first Conference
on Art in Oklahoma (1998). Her museum career started as Curator
at the Oklahoma City Art Museum (1991-95), now
Oklahoma City Museum of Art. While working in museums,
Alyson wrote and obtained numerous grants and served as a grants
panel reviewer for state arts councils and the Institute for
Museum and Library Services. She served as a field reviewer
for the accreditation program of the American Association of
Museums.
Alyson received her master's degree in art history from the
University of Texas at Austin. Her undergraduate degree in
art history is from the University of Oklahoma.
The Workshop:
Day 1: I’d Rather be in the Studio!
If you’re like most artists, the
word “sales” sends shivers down your spine. You’d much rather be
in the studio working than having to worry about selling. The
best sales techniques have very little to do with selling and
everything to do with building relationships with people who can
become a loyal audience and, potentially, collectors
of your work. You’re an artist, but you’re also a
businessperson. Learn to generate interest in your art and in
yourself. Start creating a buzz that will boost your art career!
Topics include:
- Expanding Your Network
- Finding Effective
Promotional Language
- Forming Powerful Community
Alliances
Day 2: Marketing Your Art
Online
Just what it says.
Developing a Web Presence and focusing on creating
an online buzz
for your art.
